Facilitated Film Screenings
SM&D uses the power of documentary films to promote a human rights-based approach to development. Trained facilitators audiences through film screenings and facilitated discussions, guiding through the Four stages of the learning cycle and problem tree discussions. While going through the process, taking the different steps, there is continuously room for opportunities, new ideas and contributions from the involved parties. A properly planned project addressing the real needs of the beneficiaries is necessarily based upon a correct and complete analysis of the existing situation.
Lesotho International Film Festival
SM&D coordinates the Lesotho International Film Festival and organizes an annual event since 2011, for international film festival, showcasing local and international films. This is to give a platform to young local filmmakers to use film as a tool to share authentic experiences on social, economic and cultural issues affecting them. Each year the festival is hosted under the human rights centered theme ‘Telling African Stories’
Thematic Focus Areas Statement for SM&D
Our Priority Areas
Based on an analysis of Lesotho’s unique country statistics and funding trends, SM&D has identified strategic thematic focus areas to address pressing social issues and maximize impact. The following thematic areas have been prioritized:
HIV and AIDS
This area focuses on addressing Lesotho’s high prevalence rates of HIV and AIDS, particularly among youth, with a special emphasis on adolescent girls. By providing comprehensive education and awareness campaigns, targeted at changing behaviors and reducing stigma, we aim to empower the younger generation with accurate knowledge to protect themselves and their communities.
Gender Based Violance
Gender-based violence is a significant issue affecting all demographics in Lesotho, with adolescent girls being particularly vulnerable. Through media campaigns, community dialogues, and tailored interventions, we strive to raise awareness, prevent violence, and support survivors. By empowering youth, especially adolescent girls, to take action against violence, we aim to create safer environments and ensure their well-being.
Human Rights
Promoting human rights, including child rights, women’s rights, and rights of marginalized groups, is essential for building an equitable society. This thematic area focuses on increasing knowledge and awareness of rights among youth, especially adolescent girls, while empowering them to advocate for equality in their communities. Additionally, initiatives aim to improve access to education and healthcare, particularly addressing challenges faced by adolescent girls.
Climate Change Resilience
Lesotho’s vulnerability to climate change has significant implications, especially for its youth, including adolescent girls. By supporting youth-led initiatives and promoting sustainable practices, we aim to build resilience against climate change effects. This includes reducing carbon footprints, providing climate resilience training, and empowering adolescent girls to become champions for environmental conservation within their communities.
Digitization
In today’s digital age, improving digital literacy is crucial for youth, including adolescent girls, to access educational and economic opportunities. This thematic area focuses on increasing digital literacy rates, facilitating digital entrepreneurship or employment, and ensuring access to digital resources and information. By bridging the digital divide, we aim to empower youth with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
