MISSION &VISION.
We bring change through Media
For over 23 years, SM&D has established partnerships with diverse organisations, including NGOs focusing on various Human Rights, Sexual Based Violence (SBV) and Sexual Reproductive Health Right (SRHR) issues both locally and internationally. Networking and partnering with local organisations improve the organisation’s capacity to supply the growing demand for SM&D’s services across Lesotho. SM&D is audited every 6 months by an external auditing firm.
Our Mission
To promote the use of facilitated film screenings as a tool for dialogue and dissemination of information to enable the marginalized to make informed decisions about their lives and become agents of change.
Our Vission
To be a leading organization that uses the power of film to engage marginalized audiences around issues of social change to contribute towards sustainable development in Lesotho.
ORGANISATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Facilitated film Screening
SM&D uses the power of documentary films to promote a human rights-based approach to development. Trained facilitators audiences through film screenings and facilitated discussions, guiding through the Four stages of the learning cycle and problem tree discussions. While going through the process, taking the different steps, there is continuously room for opportunities, new ideas and contributions from the involved parties. A properly planned project addressing the real needs of the beneficiaries is necessarily based upon a correct and complete analysis of the existing situation.
Lesotho International Film Festival
SM&D coordinates the Lesotho International Film Festival and organizes an annual event since 2011, for international film festival, showcasing local and international films. This is to give a platform to young local filmmakers to use film as a tool to share authentic experiences on social, economic and cultural issues affecting them. Each year the festival is hosted under the human rights centered theme ‘Telling African Stories’
We address the following
HIV and AIDS
HIV and AIDS
Lesotho contends with one of the highest HIV and AIDS prevalence rates globally, with profound social and economic implications. Youth, especially adolescent girls, represent a vulnerable population facing increased HIV infection risks. We empower Lesotho’s youth, especially adolescent girls, with accurate and accessible HIV and AIDS education, promoting behavior change and reducing stigma, thereby mitigating the impact of the epidemic on the younger generation.

Gender Based Violance
Gender-based violence remains a pervasive issue in Lesotho, impacting individuals of all demographics, with adolescent girls being particularly vulnerable. We protect and empower Lesotho’s youth, by promoting awareness, prevention, and support for survivors of gender-based violence, fostering a safer society and ensuring their well-being
Human Rights
Human Rights
Promoting human rights is integral to building an equitable society, and Lesotho’s youth, including adolescent girls, face unique challenges in accessing their rights. Adolescent girls often encounter issues such as child marriage, limited educational opportunities. To advance the rights of Lesotho’s youth, especially adolescent girls, ensuring their access to education, healthcare, and protection from harmful practices, while advocating for gender equality and inclusivity.

Digitization
In an increasingly digital world, access to information and resources is essential for the development of youth, including adolescent girls. Improving digital literacy and closing the digital divide can empower them to participate fully in the digital age.
To enhance digital literacy among Lesotho’s youth, providing them with the tools to navigate the digital landscape safely and access educational and economic opportunities.
Climate Change
Climate Change
Lesotho’s vulnerability to climate change has significant implications for its environment, economy, and communities, including youth, particularly adolescent girls. As climate change impacts livelihoods, food security, and water availability, adolescent girls in rural areas are disproportionately affected. To build climate resilience among Lesotho’s youth, equipping them with knowledge and skills to mitigate the effects of climate change and promote sustainable practices in their communities.
